Here is the full invitation from Sally at FPWA…

Dear Colleagues,

FPWA is pleased to let you know that we are running a 2 day Core of Life Facilitator Training workshop on the 7th and 8th of November, 2011. The registration fee is $100.00 (GST free) per person. This workshop is partly funded by FPWA and OATSIH. Please see the Flyer/Registration Form and Information brochure attached.

Core of Life is an education program mainly for adolescents and young parents about the choices and challenges of being pregnant, giving birth and the early weeks of becoming a parent. The information is delivered in a dynamic, interactive manner by at least 2 facilitators in both school and community settings. Maternity, youth health and education workers and community members are encouraged to apply for this facilitator training.

COL uses slide images, video, discussion and role play to portray real life and offers a variety of proven quality teaching resources to increase the effectiveness of this type of education to a variety of audiences. The program and resources have been successfully adapted for Aboriginal young people.

The program’s key aims are to:
    * Encourage increased self confidence in making informed decisions regarding sexual and reproductive health choices thus discouraging unplanned teenage pregnancy.
    * Improve youth/community connectedness to support active engagement with available pregnancy and parenting support services.
    * Foster positive pregnancy and parenting practices thus promoting improved child and family wellbeing outcomes.

We look forward to your expressions of interest in this exciting program,

Sally Hutchinson.

Alcohol education the key to a better lifestyle

Mike Daube recently wrote an article in The West Australian: Alcohol education the key to a better lifestyle

Sue wrote a response which was published in Letters to the Editor West Australian Thursday May 19, 2011 and here it is…

Congratulations to Mike Daube for his Opinion piece (Alcohol education the key to a better lifestyle, 16/05). This should be made compulsory reading for all politicians, administrators in all education systems and sectors, educators and parents. The WA Health Promoting Schools Association (WAHPSA), together with many teachers and organisations has, for many years, taken this position but has had little success in increasing the profile of health education within a comprehensive school approach due to the mandatory nature of many other subject areas and the total educational focus on literacy and numeracy.

Some schools are providing excellent, effective health education in their schools but many more are not – they cover health issues in an ad hoc manner often employing ‘experts’ who have no relationship or connection with the students (like teachers do) to present one off sessions especially in the controversial areas of sexuality and drug education. One reason for this is that many teachers do not feel competent or confident in these areas because of a lack of pre-service or ongoing professional learning. Drug, relationships and sexuality education professional learning opportunities are provided free of charge to all school systems and sectors throughout WA.

Sexuality (relationships) education learning opportunities are not often take up by many because of the perceived lack of value by politicians, educational hierarchy and teachers many of whom are more concerned with NAPLAN results than ensuring that young Australians are equipped with the necessary knowledge, attitudes and skills to lead healthy lives and develop behaviours that will keep them safer and healthier well beyond their school years.

The crowded curriculum is another excuse for not addressing pressing health issues in the classroom however any motivated teacher can design activities that cover health education content in an integrated manner across all curriculum areas - especially literacy and numeracy.

Every student is entitled to effective and ongoing health education throughout their school careers and all schools need to guarantee comprehensive health education for all our young people (this is currently not the case in WA schools). Health education is the ONLY learning area in the K-12 curriculum which could potentially be a matter of life and death in the very near future or in the longer term for our next generation.

For the sake of our entire community, young people need effective school health education in order to face some of the most pressing challenges of modern life.
